Small Poppies - 165 Nicholson St Footscray.

Yes, I’m out of the CBD at the moment. I have found myself in what may as well be another country. Footscray is an amazing spot, not the groovua Collins Street, not even the funky back streets, but amongst a range of gastronomic offerings I found the Small Poppies Cafe & Bar. Loved the ambiance, and I’m tipping this place rocks after hours, not that I’ll know any time soon. The coffee is ordinary, however it’s ‘Fair Trade’ and I guess for that, they are to be commended. The service, was poor but the ambiance was kewl; I miss the city!!

I noticed the same thing when I went there the first time. Also made a comment on it on my blog.

  2. Hey don’t give up on getting good coffee in Footscray! Dishwater Cafe (aka Small Poppies) isn’t the only place around, there’s:

Africa Town at 161-163 Nicholson St ph. 9689 9660.
Great food and fantastic ethiopian coffee. Quoted from africanoz.com.au “At an African festival in Sydney, an Ethiopian woman told the audience, “In the West, you have counsellors and psychologists … In Ethiopia, we have coffee ceremonies”.

Don’t just think Lavazza for coffee, the africans most definitely know where it’s at! Well worth a visit!

Also Naked Japan a bit further down at 133 Nicholson St (9687 8091). Very good coffee and a funky place in general.

One more to visit is the Dancing Dog Cafe at 42a Albert Street Footscray ph 9689 2566. I reckon the coffee’s not too shabby here either. It’s located just around the corner from Burning Books & Savers.

Footscray is only 12mins on the train from the Melbourne CBD come over again and do some more reviews!

  3. Hi there,

The Dancing dog has great food and a lovely sunlit courtyard on warm days.Good staff and yummy hearty food.

Another find is 26 Nicholson street (that’s it’s name), an old Victorian mansion, renovated and opened up as a cafe/restaurant that also has functions. It’s divine and has a beautiful large dining room with french doors opening out onto a courtyard and victorian garden.

Reasonably priced good quality food. Decent sourdough bread that you’d find in other good inner city areas and a lovely amibience. Coffee not too bad but ask for it strong. It’s a hidden gem and is frequented laregly but locals on weekends and staff and students from Vic Uni.Definately worth a write up.

  4. I think Footscray rocks! There are some fantastic, economical places to find a good feed! I agree that Dancing Dog Cafe is great for coffee and they also do fun things there such as ukelele lessons and african drumming nights. They usually have interesting exhibitions running too.

  5. need to update your site - Small Poppies is not there anymore - hasn’t been there for over 1 year - its a fast food joint instead.
