Well let me just say, it was both an honor and an absolute pleasure to trek down to Abbotsford, and meet the great David Makin.
As a confirmed caffeine addict and café junky it was quite exciting.
First Pour is home to probably some of the best Baristas this country has to offer, with not only David, but also Luca and David Seng doing their thing behind the amazing Yellow La Marzocca.
How can I dare to review their coffee?
What adjectives can one use to describe such an experience?
Another latte, why not, the last 3 were great, bring it on, Davo!!!
No seriously guys, if you haven’t make sure you do! If you have, I’m sure you’ll agree!!
I spent most of the day with David learning about what it takes to be the best, and at Makin’ espresso which operates out of the Veneziano warehouse; David does his best to teach us poor humans the fine art of being a true Barista, a maestro!
Without doubt a three beaner and a MUST for all seriously looking for that amazing Coffee experience!

Unfortunatey the term “Golden Bean” is already in use by the Equal Golden Bean roasters competition.
You should come to the National Barista Competition, Steve…take a few photos and do a write up.

Hi David
thanks for the info…..
I plan to be @ the Nationals next week, and am looking forward to seeing you guys in action!
Good luck, not that you’ll need it!
See you there
Would be helpful to mention in the review that it’s not open on weekends.
SORRY!!!
It actually is open Saturday morning until 1pm, CHEERS!
I am from Oregon and traveled in Australia this month, among other things searching for perfect espressos. In Sydney, Single Origin blew me away; in Melbourne, Primary and St. Ali were far above the rest (with disappointments at HQ and Beans and Bagels). Here are my notes from my visits to Primary and St. Ali:
PRIMARY
1. Wonderful cappuccino. Pretty, fine-veined heart, smooth and mild first sip, with pure espresso taste at its core. Elegant and enticing. Loses a little bit of its core as the temperature drops, milk taking over.
2. Serious macchiato, an espresso with really only a drop of foamy milk, but smooth and incredibly long finish. Smokey crema, warm feel, no edge, enveloping the mouth and cheeks, fruity even.
Note: Jessie pulled the shots at the time I was there. Great guy!
ST. ALI
1. Chatting with the pour barrista (later learned his name is Toshi) at the counter, the shot barrista (unfortunately forgot his name) handed me a pure ristretto shot to taste. Amazing chocolate nose, a bit more sour notes than Primary on the top palate, but also great, long finish.
2. The cappuccino has a beautiful flower and still great foam. On the stem side of the flower, milk slightly dominates, but the smooth coffee integration is wonderful; on the blossom side, where a little more dark crema is left, the sip is perfect, has all the great pure espresso tones and sweet milk tones integrated, with great length from the sweetest crema. Among the best cappuccino sips I have ever had – narrowly edging Primary, mainly because the dropping temperature has no effect on the complexity, balance, and amzing length .
Thanks for that Bertram, WOW! all the way from Oregon, God Melbourne Coffee Review does get around….EXCELLENT!!!
With a post like that bro, you should be reviewing…Keep on caffeining on dude and always remember that life is too short to drink bad coffee, thank God for the Melbourne Coffee Review!!!!
I had 2 coffees there last weekend and was very dissapointed. Both coffees had a good crema with a reasonable attempt at art and were served at the perfect temperature, but both were rather inspid, lacking intensity and depth of flavour and not a lot af complexity. They definately were not the worst coffee I’ve had, but they were not worthy of 3 beans and not worth travelling for.
Hey rob, I am lost for words!!!!!!
I will definately bring it to their attention and apologise, but really they are quite an amazing place, maybe they were having a bad day
NO EXCUSE THOUGH!!!
I will definately let them know!!
the CaFFiend!!!
