173 Clarendon St

South Melbourne Vic 3205

The Gateway to South Melbourne, was my first thought as I cruised down Clarendon St, leaving behind the CBD and Spencer St.

What a spot, what an iconic landmark to represent South Melbourne and it’s café culture, bugger the dim sims, I was entering Café mecca.

The Dimattina boys, in a gutsy move have decided to move operations into the heart of Café central and opened not just a café, but a veritable Alladin’s den of caffeine packed goodies.

Part training School, Batch Coffee Roaster as well as a quality Café, this is your one stop shop for all things coffee and your next caffeine hit, or so I hoped as I crossed the threshold.

Immaculately fitted out, with complete attention to every detail, this place oozed cool and suaveness from the exquisite coffee machines on the front counter, right down to the batch roaster in the back to the ‘Ronnie Woods’ private room down below, WOW! What a place, let’s hope the coffee was up to scratch, coz I wanna hang out here more: I LOVED IT!

Out came my ristretto, which I confidently ordered, comfortable that the barista would know what to do, and by God, did he!?!?!?

The aroma wafted and permeated the air, slicing it like a hot knife through butter, I was transfixed gazing at the exquisite colors, the beautiful inflection in my Devil’s Cup.

A dense crema, rich aroma, fruity front, acidic middle and boy a boy what finish, in the words of Bruno @ C4…..”its all about the JOURNEY!”

And believe me, entering this gateway the journey had just begun

I followed up my espresso with a café latte, hopeful that it would replicate the caffeine hit, and boy did it come to the party.

Delicately textured milk, blended effortlessly with the Dimattina house-blend to produce a beverage that was all about quality, all about coffee.

Welcome to the bean club boys, 3 BIG ones here and KUDOS to you for showing us all what a quality café is all about, keep up the good work and you are invited to join the ranks of the elite at :

    Hey PatricK(askthecoffeeguy),
I know you need to go try this one, they have numerous blends and are really passionate about the whole thing
You know bro that I’m all about unbiased and honest reviews, surprised at your comment about pr and advertising especially after the whole mess with the Melbourne Coffee Guide, which has thankfully been put to rest!!!
I’m not about self promotion and ‘pr’ my friend, there are alot of honest people out there doing great things, all I’m doing is letting the world know….I love a great coffee as much as the next guy and have alot of respect for the whole industry, Dimattina’s included, let’s make coffee, not WAR!!!

    Keep on caffeining on dude!!!

    The CaFFiend!!!

actually I think you are right – the proof is in the cup, as they saying goes, and upon recollection I’ve had very good dimatina coffee elsewhere. I’m often in the area (my coffee supplier is just around the corner) – so I’ll be sure to check it out for myself – and next time I’ll reserve my comments until I’ve savoured the flavour! Thanks for the heads up :) pat
