West End Deli

95 Carr Street, West Perth
Hours: Mon-Fri 7am-4pm
Sat and Sun 8am-4pm

I had heard on the coffee grapevine that West End Deli was a must visit, so I ventured to West Perth to sample their wares.

As you walk in there is a wooden table adorned with lemon tarts, almond croissants, pecan tarts with maple syrup and banana bread. A glass cabinet full of foccacias, pork pies, steak and mushroom pies, morillo and chorizo sausages and quiches. These are all produced on the premises including the breads.

It has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, the far wall is adorned with posters for musical concerts and events, clientele range from local residents to business people dropping in for lunch and a coffee.

Yes the coffee, I ordered a short macchiato and it was presented by Ryan (ex Epic Espresso) in a quaint floral cup and saucer, it looked tempting and my first sip confirmed that this was going to be a pleasant experience. Temperature was perfect, silky-smooth textured microfoam, the ristretto shot was viscous and oh so smooth, the blend had fruity/choc notes with hints of an Ethiopian in there. I returned again 3 days later and ordered a flat white and my wife a latte, both had ornate artwork on silky-smooth milk, temperature just right, the blend cut through the milk giving a fruity/choc taste with good body and left a lovely lingering aftertaste.

Coffee roasted by Golden Bean winning Fiori

Being open on Saturday and Sunday a leisurely breakfast or lunch sipping on Ryan’s great coffee sounds like a great way to wind down after a busy week. I’ve put the Deli on my must return-to list.

Two big beans here and close to a third.

They change their staff all the time in this place and the service is good or bad depending on who is working.
    Recommended for take away only.

That big mouth Ryan has gone – I am pretty sure. He is goooood. I enjoyed a good standard fiori espresso there. One of the better ones. A solid 1 Beaner. The coffee was a bit one dimensional; some flavour, OK body, lacked sweetness or big flavour, so-so finish. Very Fiori – but good and sound – NICE! A bit contrived for me, lacks excitement and depth. Very Perth. Good – hopefuly “one to watch”. Count on it to an extent. In a remote location they deserve support and are geneuinely interesting. 1/2 a Bean.
