Coffee & Art

Sometimes you can’t find a good coffee no matter how hard you search.  Other times it smacks you when you are least suspecting.  Fortunately for me, a recent trip to sunny San Diego, (the home of Ron Burgundy for those in the know), I was treated to an excellent espresso from out of nowhere.  Wandering a little north of the famed Gaslight District, I spotted a place called Coffee & Art. Turns out the place is brand new and owned by two friendly South African blokes who pulled such a brilliantly balanced caffe latte, I just had to follow it up with a doppio to make sure I wasn’t imagining things.  The latte milk was texturized nearly perfectly with that velvety feels that I often crave, but am so rarely delivered.  I then realized we were only getting warmed up, with the caffe latte serving as a more than capable opening act for the main show of the doppio that followed.  The doppio presented with a thick, lush crema, a beautiful full bodied aroma and tasted flat out superb.  There was beautiful hints of chocolate on the front of the palate complementing a very smooth pull – a much needed contrast to the numerous dishy slops that I’ve been served of late.  They use a blend from locally based Italian roasters called Caffe Calabria which I highly recommend based on the coffees I tasted. What started as the quest for a simple quick hit turned into a 45 minute chat and a great way to idle away a morning. Great coffee, great cafe, great people.
