32 Angove Street, North Perth

Open 7 days a week, 7am-7pm

After reading about milkd in the ‘West’ I decided to head down and sample their wares.

Located in a line of strip shops on busy Angove Street, milkd is a cosy little cafe with a  display cabinet full of tempting cakes, gourmet sandwiches and foccacias, there are tables outside where one can sit and sip on a latte and watch the world go by.

They have a diverse menu that changes with the seasons and they use only quality suppliers like Mondo butchers, New Norcia Bakery and cup cakes from Baby Cakes. I took one of the cup cakes home for my wife’s afternoon tea and she gave it the royal seal of approval.

Their barista was busy on the Cimbali when I approached to order my short macchiato, service was friendly and efficient, I settled at my table and my mach arrived soon after, it was well presented, good temperature, had a lovely rich crema with a splash of textured milk on top, it had good body and a bright choc/cocoa taste with a viscous mouthfeel, an enjoyable well-crafted caffeine hit, the afteraste had hints of a darker roast profilie and  was an enjoyable way to satisfy my caffeine need.

I can see why this cafe is popular with their loyal band of followers, another great venue on the radidly improving Perth cafe scene.

Friends take me here regulary. Another hit or miss place. More miss for me becasue they don’t grind fresh. They’re not open to coffee talk either too defensive and really not that interested (and trust my I don’t launch into coffee chat hard either). I really don’t like the attitude around coffee here – they say they’re “Da best” quite openly, I think they really beleive it too. The reality is that they are good in a part of town that should be serviing outstanding cups everywhere but are really average (in a poor to average local market). Great design/ fitout and food and other items. NOOOO Beans. They ain’t even trying.

Visited Milk again today at the insistence of my bride, the place was busy, the doser was full of pre-ground dark looking grinds so I immediately ordered an OJ and my wife a tea, the croissant she had was so-so and my OJ was watery and insipid, not a pleasant experience at all.
I must have visited on a good coffee day last time!!
