It’s always a bit of an ask, a stretch after a hard day’s work, out and about sampling, tasting, drinking, reviewing, to have to bear the almost unbearable trek through the Fashion Capital.
But we gotta do what we gotta do………here we go again! Is there any hope of caffeination?
Well there’s the usual haunts, bean there done that! I need a new sensation, a new HIT!
Enter Jones the Grocer with their shiny La Marzocca: Where there’s an LM there’s always hope and usually plenty of caffeine fuelled passion…….The CaFFiend felt a spark of interest, of intrigue, of hope. Could it be that there was a chance of satisfaction @ Chadstone?!?!?!
An upmarket Deli really, very clean, very friendly, very welcoming and very inviting. Worth a look just to see how the other half live, trust me this aint no ALDI……..
I order a ristretto and watch, keen to see just how into it the young barista is. Well the extraction is perfect, a bit fast but cut short, presented with a dense crema, wafting chocolate aromas, a thick and viscous extraction that really is both complex and flavoursome.
I order a cafe latte, keen to see how the delicious espresso combines with milk and to watch our barista attempt the often under-rated skill of texturing milk.
It was poetry in motion ,the whole process delicate and well practiced, a visual masterpiece that was clearly well honed after many hours of practice and passion.
The beverage presented was pure GOLDILOCKS, perfect! The temperature, the taste, the whole offering was pure bliss on the palate, worthy of 2 Beans from the CaFFiend, an absolute pleasure to partake in.
Go down and say g’day and give the boys @ Jones the Grocer a crack, you’ll be glad you did, tell ‘em the CaFFiend sent you and keep on caffeining on……
Coffee: St Ali

I tried Jones Espresso at (the new) Westfield Doncaster. The cappuccino was OK (another young barista), but macaroon I had with it was a delicious revelation that has me looking forward to the next time I’m there!
I can’t believe you even list this, let alone give it a 2 bean rating. Sure, they sell St Ali Coffee, but skill was severely lacking when I visited. I went to buy coffees to drink there, and to buy beans. The coffee was made by a school kid who clearly had no clue how to use their machine – on the cappuccino burnt milk, foam that tasted of cardboard. On the espresso, overextracted and watery. I gave up and decided to buy beans to take home to do a better job. Nobody in the store knew anything about the coffee they sold. There may be a talented Barista that works there, but not on the day I went. Overall staff knowledge of their products was disgraceful – even the manager had no clue. How ever did this store make your list?!
In our defense, things change in cafes. They were doing it right when I did this review. That’s the reason we let the comments reign in after. we will have an even more bullet proof system soon.
@ Peter: Totally understand – I just wanted to make sure others were aware of the variability!
Visited this based on the 2 bean rating. Unfortunately didn’t even get the chance to try it as I left after waiting 20 minutes to get the coffee after ordering. The place was so badly organised with badly organised staff and orders being done haphazardly.
I appreciate that the review should be done on the coffee but service and efficiency are also part of having a relaxing brew
we’ll take another look,.. been getting some bad feedback lately. review is old
