One of the hardest things to keep a track of in MCR is new cafe’s popping up in obscure places, so when my buddy and industry oracle Nathan Wakeford from Somage Fine Foods suggested we meet at a new place, I jumped at the chance. Face time with Nathan and a new cafe, I love it.

I arrived at Miss Marmalade (just 2 days old on my visit on Friday), and was greeted by what seemed ‘very friendly’ and enthusiastic staff (I didn’t know they had just opened). The place is immaculate, clean and laid out with an obvious attention to detail. There was even a tradesman still doing his thing while I was there, but it didn’t detract from the operations of the cafe.

I had a meet, a meal and held off my coffee until after a stupendous steak sandwich (nearly registered MelbourneSandwichReview.com), and then ordered up my double shot espresso. I was delighted at receiving a well presented, and simple coffee. What hit my lips was a smooth nectar that complimented my meal perfectly. Strong, and bold, with definite chocolaty taste.

Great job guys, welcome to MCR and a solid 2 beans.
(why Miss Marmalade?)

Can’t wait to get back to Melbourne to go to Miss Marmalade! I’m so happy for Tony & Robyn!

Well if Matilda thinks it will be a great place for coffee I will try it too

Cool place. Best Coffee in a long time. Thanks Miss Marmalade!

A disappointing visit – spoke to someone named Robyn (who I assumed was one of the owners?) when I phoned on Friday to inquire as to whether Miss M takes bookings and was told emphatically that they didn’t. After consulting my fellow diners (who all have kids which was the reason for our selection of Miss M as the venue for our Sunday lunch), we agreed to take the good with the bad and try our luck. When we arrived, we asked for a table for 8 and were met with the reply ‘do you have a booking?’! We were then subsequently told by a very off-hand staff member that they had just seated 3 big tables and couldn’t possibly fit us in.
Get it together guys! You either do take bookings or you don’t – it’s not that difficult. We came close to having our plans for a kid-friendly outing de-railed. As it happens we ended up at the pub across the road where the staff were friendly and the food was great – we know where we’ll be headed back to – and it won’t be Miss Marmalade!

As a post script I would be happy to withdraw my criticism after being contacted by Robyn herself in response to an email I sent her regarding our experience. There has been a new staff member taking bookings who made the error and the professional and prompt way Robyn has dealt with this has negated the ill will created by the encounter.

I have to say, that people need to tread lightly. I found the MM team remarkably professional, but of course some times the best experience is not had. that doesn’t mean we smash them on the nearest blog! I posted both to illustrate the point. I would gladly ‘give it to’ a serial deliverer of bad coffee and service, this place is not it. Keep up the good work MM!

Well thank you for ‘teaching me a lesson’.
