Pickel-barrel

I was coaxed down to Williamstown with the promise of great coffee at this place called The Pickel Barrel. I made my way down there, I actually like Willytown but they have not moved on from the mid 70′s in terms of Decor and quality coffee. I have done coffee in most of the local haunts and none has impressed me. Our readers seem to agree.

Well, I ordered a short Mach and waited for gold. They use Genovese which is a good major supplier of great coffee in this town. I wrote about them when I first started MCR in 2005. I chatted with my friend Bart about the machinations of running MCR, and the coffee arrived, delivered in the usual manner.

It was an ok brew, the taste was strong, with a lingering bitterness. The froth on the mach was a little much, remember what Macchiatto means, its a stain (as I was advised by Bruno from C4), a small spoon of froth for look, not a head of froth! But a reasonable coffee considering the loc, just makes it into the 1 bean family. Its the best coffee I’ve tasted in Willytown, so thats got to say something.

Well done guys!

This cafe stands out from the crowd in Willy, the coffee is the best this side of town but it is the food at this cafe that really rocks. Consistently fresh, yummy and much better than a lot of what you get in a lot of CBD cafes.

“This side of town” Bart? If you mean roughly the inner-ish western suburbs then you are sorely mistaken.

Cornershop, Le Chien, Nosh, Duchess of Spotswood and Mies leave the Pickle in their wake in the coffee stakes.

Looks like it’s time fir another trip over! Ar they on hotshots?

Evan! Get a grip! Dude… Mies and duchess of spotty are fly by nighters.. Just do a drive by of these places including nosh and le chien and u will find that the pickle barrel is always packing in more ppl than all the other places put together!! That to me speaks volumes!! This place is amazing! The best consistant coffee, food and service on offer in the west! Well done pickle barrel and thank you x

    John,
    if you think that mies
    and duchess are
    fly by nighters, you obviously
don’t get they Hudsons rd very often. When I line up for my morning coffee at mies, i can’t move some days. There are quiet
times, I’m sure, but if you insist
on judging how good a cafe is by how many ‘ppl’ it has packing into it then I suppose you think your local ‘Macdonalds should have a Michelin star awarded.
But by all means keep packing into TPB, it’ll keep the queues shorter at Mies:-)
