MCR was founded on a passion for great coffee and great coffee culture. In time we have been fortunate in that we have developed into a community of coffee lovers not only in Melbourne Australia our home, but throughout the world. As we developed into a commercial enterprise we held some things as non negotiable. That our reviews, the core offering to our readers, be based on the values of fairness and integrity (i.e. be unbiased). That they are informative and entertaining, and that whatever our view, it is respectful of the owners and staff of those cafes.
Our reviewers are carefully vetted, and we supply them with a framework to deliver their reviews. Our mantra is NO VESTED INTERESTS. We reject ‘guest reviews’ who have made little attempt to align with our values and in particular seek to damage a café. Our three bean rating, while light hearted originally, now translates to:-
No bean, but worth a mention. May be moving to a 1 beaner in the future.
1 Bean. A quality coffee and/or service. The reviewer would drink there on occasion if they lived near by.
2 Beans. An extraordinary coffee experience. The barista knows what they are doing and the coffee is delivered consistently. The surroundings are welcoming and service excellent.
3 Beans. Something that leaves you thinking about it for weeks. This is the nectar of the gods type review, where the coffee experience has moved from great to heavenly.
To ensure the long term viability of the business MCR has rolled out additional services like Hotshots, Jobs and Advertising. We have done our utmost to not compromise our values and yet offer our café owners value for money. We consider our cafes and their owners a big part of our community and our door is open any time you want to discuss anything including what we do and how we do it.
Because life is too short for bad coffee!

Founder MCR.

We would love it if you would drop by our cafe for a coffee!
Hope to see you soon,

Please come back and re-do Cityblend on Little Collins street. The Barista you describe is long-gone (i’ve worked in the building above it for two years now and i’ve never heard of him, my boss raves about the guy though) and they have a new fellow who, frankly, isn’t much chop.
Regards, Tom

Heyns Ferreira!
I’m a Melbournian who has had itchy feet for most of my life, but being rasied on Melb coffee, and once living with a barista, my standards are pretty high. I’m moving to Washington soon and was TERRIFIED of having go without good coffee and becoming a whiner about how good Melb coffee is and everyone in Washington hating me for it. I nearly called off my plans….until I found your site. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I hate doing the coffee search in each new city I relocate to and you’ve made my life so much easier (and saved me the heaps of $$’s that would be wasted on bad coffee during my search) cheers
Hi Guys
As usual when i hit the street, I always check the nearest MCR location that I have copied into my phone. It was no exception today when I tried Ludo cafe in Queen St.Yet another brilliant recommendation and my latte hit the spot on a cold and chilly morning.
I always try to tell the cafe that I am there after reading the MCR review.I do this after i have been handed the coffee so that i don’t get special treatment !
Finally it’s good to see that your reviews and that of customers are getting through.I went to Studio Movida in Kew the other morning and was impressed enough to add a comment later that day, on the MCR site.I was in the area again the next day and grabbed another coffee. The owner told me he had read the comment and they were changing the signage outside to make it look like a cafe as opposed to a fitness studio. As long as they don’t change the coffee.
Thanks again
Paul

Hi Peter,
I immediately thought of you when I saw this:

Hey Guys,
Love the website. A couple of cafes out my way that would definitely be worth reviewing are Weir St Food Store in Montmorency and Sugar Cube in Eltham. Both places very fussy about their coffee.
It’s better to be fair, free and organic – so why not pop down to:
Caffe Sospeso
@ 428 Burwood Road, Hawthorn
and enjoy certified fairtrade coffee. And whilst you’re at it, buy two coffees – one for yourself the other, we’ll ‘hold one in suspense’ to offer someone who is homeless or otherwise down on their luck. Just another great cafe doing its bit for the community!
Hi Guys,
Just stumbled across the site, after tracking down Atomica coffee, and love it!
Can also offer 2 cafe’s for review, no allegiance/commercial connection to either. They just serve damn fine coffee.
Selections in Clarendon St Sth Melb. Interesting twist in that they have a counter that opens onto Clarendon St! Serving Atomica coffee, consistently good.
dancing goat cafe in Lt Lonsdale St just up from King St towards William St. WOW Fantastic coffee, but get there before 3 as they clean the machine after that. Don’t think they been open long, but again, fantastic coffee.
Keep up the good work.
Hey, I’ve moved to a new cafe.
Squirrel Cafe, 23 Groom St, Clifton Hill, 0394892077
We start using Jasper Coffee, Friday the 31st of July. We will be using Indian Yellnikhan. Its spectacular I say. An all rounder really, damn good Espresso, damn good Latte.
Come in and ask for Caspian. See you soon.
well richmond really lacks quality coffee but finally i have discovered a fitzroy feeling cafe in an otherwise dreary street. great coffee, consistent, creamy milk and fast! well worth the walk to the quiet end of bridge road thoroughly recommend this place
Please do a review of Seven Seeds, 114 Berkeley St, Carlton.

Hi Guys
Have just received my Coffee Guide. It is FANTASTIC.
I am looking forward to trying some of the different cafes in it. I just enjoy being able to pick it up and have a read. I love the coffee picture pages with the quotes on them. A job well done. It was worth the wait!!!
Thanks again for a great book.

Hello and I think this is a great website. Without knowing ( I am from Brisbane) about your website, I started a page on the FB about coffee in Brisbane. A lot to do about the coffee in BNE. But many are good and I invite anyone to try some. I got some reviews on my page on FB so check them out!!!
Hi Del,
we review in Brisbane as well, you are welcome to become a reviewer through us.
Peter
Great site and really like the iPhone app, but hey, we live in Collingwood and there are some great coffee shops here, some of which you have already reviewed – can you recognise Collingwood’s existence with a slot for it on the dial.
Also like to see things like Bluebird Espresso and Proud Mary show up, rather than just the 3 and 2 bean places.
Thanks
Thanks Alison, we are on it… the next versions will allow you to nominate cafes, and even check into them so you get loyalty points.
Peter
Hey Peter,
Love your website. I’m an older (49yr old) coffee nut which started when mum used to make us kids a cafe late using every morning for breakfast way before it was trendy to have coffee! My twin and I used to operate a cafe in Box Hill and so I’m into coffee in a big way. I was wondering if youve tried either Romeo’s in Doncaster Road Greythorn or Cavalino in Queens Pde Clifton Hill. I’ve found both these outlets to be consistent in delivering excellent coffee. I also think it would be interesting to here about the experiences others have had with home coffee machines I’ve had 2 Saecco’s and had trouble with both!
cheers
Serge
old? dude,.. Thanks for your kind words… we are structuring a way to funnel in and review these places. Yes, the machines are an issue,.. its on our todolist!
Pete
I second the comment for Bambini Barista – my fave city coffee & great turkish bread toast.
How about some western suburb reviews? I’ve had some great coffees in Seddon & Yarraville
Here’s another suggestion for you to visit; new cafe “Espresso 521″ in North Melbourne. The address is:
