It was an auspicious day yesterday,… we have been tinkering away with a new service for our readers that allows them to order and pay for their coffee via their mobile phones, our smart phone apps (iPhone and WP7) and the web.

We ticked off the first one, and opened for business in Dukes, 65 Degrees, Calzones, and the Sensory Lab.

We are offering a free coffee to the first 50 registrations that come through today and tomorrow. Go to mcr.jumporder.com to set yourself up via your MCR account. The system might take a few hrs to respond, so don’t stress,.. we’ll zap you an sms with the confirmation when it’s ready.

Any probs call Mark on 0417 544 616.

ok, I know you cafe owners have been waiting for this; you can now update your own cafe data on MCR. That’s right, log onto HotShots and it’s all there. The idea is that you can manage your own record that goes out to the web, iPhone and (soon) the Windows Phone 7. That means if you change coffee, barista, or even ownership, you can let the world know.

More to come… MCR

Yep, we have just been told by the Victorian government that we are a part of Victorian culture and as a publication (electronic and physical) we need to give one to both the Victorian State Library, and the Australian National Library to go into national archives. Also, it looks like they will, as of now, take a copy of the whole MCR web site for future Melbournian’s, so hello to you future coffee lovers, my grand kids, and great grand kids, and beyond I hope…Love from Peter Christo circa 2010!

How about them coffee beans!!

Steve Agi (thecaffiend) is moving on from MCR after adding an afterburner to us for these two blurry years. His contribution has been amazing and we will miss his unique style. Mind you I assume we will be seeing him around the coffee traps. Steve has a few new caffeine fueled opportunities (I am sure he’ll let everyone know in due course) he wants to pursue, and who are we to hold him back. We wish Steve all the best with his coffee fueled adventures.

Hi all, here’s an email I got that asks an important question.

The Question:

Hi,

My wife and I have been here for a week on holidays from Brisbane. I downloaded your app for my iPhone and have been using it to find great coffee.

I found a place right near where we were staying which was not on your app, it is in little Collins street near 362 it runs off a little allyway. We got a coffee there the first morning as we could see people standing at this little window getting coffee. It’s part of Gills cafe and I understand that they are a commercial bakery. I spoke with the barrister this morning, they use rommcaffe coffee, it is very nice I must say it rates very highly with us, we had a coffee at Brother buda place the first day we got here and I would rate the coffee at Gills up there with Brother Buda.

I am not sure how these places make your list but thought that this little place was worthy of this app.

Regards

Denis

My Answer:

Hi Denis,

Thanks for taking the time out to email us. I think we may have reviewed Gills, I know I have been there a couple of times. Here’s how it worked, works and will work:

We were originally just a blog, and over time we developed into a group of bloggers, aka the Melbourne Coffee Review. We then chose our top 100 cafes and published a guide, and the iPhone application(no small feat I assure you, I had to abandon my consulting business). It was a subjective thing to a large degree, but we pretty well nailed the main good ones, a few perhaps were line ball.

We call any cafe with +1 Bean a ‘Hotshot(tm)’, so we established a listing of those cafes (including the top 100) under http://hotshots.melbournecoffeereview.com and now open this up for voting by people like yourself who appreciate good coffee and cafes (web, sms and soon iPhone) for a few months.

Anyone can register a candidate hotshot, and then two things will happen. 1. People vote over about 3 months, (which means new little gems can get on our radar) and then 2. We review the list. We choose the top 120-130 based on score but we also look at comments and our own knowledge of who is good and who has used facebook etc to load up the votes. My team and I then choose the top 100 for the year. That happens midyear for the following year.

Once that is completed, we push out to the publication, iPhone application and then sleep for a week for sheer exhaustion and over caffination.

Cafés of course are bought and sold and established in melbourne all the time. New little gems pop up and disappear. We are exploring ways to have our users update our systems, but we are not quite there yet.

Thanks again!

Peter
PS: We are coming to Brisbane!

MCR is choosing the next Top 100 Coffee Spots Melbourne (2011) has to offer; we promised we would! However, this time, it’s you that will choose the ‘spots’, not us. That’s right, between now and the end of May 2010; we will be taking your nominations and votes for Melbourne’s hottest coffee spots.

Once we have the votes in, we’ll head out and review them, creating the “top 100 for 2011”. They will then get pushed onto the web and iPhone!

So what now? Here are the steps:

1. Get on www.melbbournecoffeereview.com and go to ‘HotShots’. (or go straight to hotshots.melbournecoffeereview.com).
2. Look for your favorite café and sms it’s MCR number to 0416905522.(eg:MCR001, lowercase is ok).
3. When you sms the first time it will create your account and register your vote (smart hey?), you’ll get an sms back with your account info and your vote confirmation.
4. When you log in, you can vote for other cafes.
5. That’s it!

IF your favorite café is not there then simply create an account via registration, and nominate a café. Give us a few hours and we’ll ok it, and then you can vote away, as can all your friends.

No this is not a premium sms (so we are not cashing in)! It’s a one off vote per café. You can vote for as many cafes as you want, your own sms costs apply.

If you are in the country, feel free to nominate great coffee shops, we are looking at having a section for regional VIC. If you are outside VIC or Australia, feel free to register cafes and vote, we’ll get to you eventually.

If you own a coffee shop, call me crazy, but I would be printing out your listing and getting my customers to vote like crazy, but that’s just me!

No, you can’t vote on the iPhone app yet, but we are working on it!!

Voting ends at the end of May 2010. Good luck and don’t break our database!!!

If you’re a regular reader here, you’ll already be more than aware that life is too short for bad coffee. Anyone care to disagree? Didn’t think so!

Not only is staying away from supermarket coffee  a tough move for most home-baristas (or even instant, c’mon, admit it – we’ve all been there before), but the pursuit of coffee in its finest form can really take some effort. Are you one of the few who would walk three CBD blocks just for a superior cup? If so, you’re in for a relaxing treat with a World Tour ticket, but you have less than 72 hours before its snatched away for another two weeks.

Wondering what the World Tour is? We recently added the World Tour link you can see to the right there, but we did it steathily, without telling anyone. If you click on through this mysterious link (http://worldtour.melbournecoffeereview.com/), you can uncover all the details you need to know. The curiosity of over a thousand MCR readers is astounding becasue even though we put up the link without a proper MCR announcement last week, we are almost at capacity for our first World Tour destination!

I know it can be hard to move quickly on a Friday evening but if you want fresh coffee the way it was meant to be experienced, you’d better get some hustle on! Click through and have a read, but you may want to speed-read as the order forms will automatically close when we hit capacity. This will easily be sometime over the weekend, well before our planned Monday cut-off, so good luck getting in and it was nice meeting you!

Well, well, well, here’s one that’s sure to strike a chord with coffee fans around town , it is the re-emergence of the original 7 grams owners, the brothers Haralambopoulos: Con, Peter & Jim…….at their new place called 65 degrees.

Sure to be a hit in the heart of the CBD, 65 degrees has just opened its doors to a caffeine fuelled city that is sure to appreciate the level of quality and meticulous care these brothers are sure to bring with them.

Judging by past performances it’s destined to be a BIG part of Melbourne’s funky cafe scene.

Just opened, it’s still a work in progress with this review being a sneak peek at the place before the brothers smother it with the sort of TLC that true operators show, that really set the great cafes apart from your run of the mill corner shop….

Gracing the bench space is the instantly recognisable little red La Marzocco which is as part of the brothers repertoire as is quality, service and plenty of big smiles…

The lads are now custom roasting all their coffee and let me tell you the ristretto that I was presented with was as good if not better than any I’ve had in recent memory. Need less to say my cafe latte chaser looked incredible and tasted even better, pure poetry in a cup!!

Keep an eye out for the updated review after the renovation in the next few weeks, and whoever emails me @ steve.agi@melbournecoffeereview.com and can tell me what significance the name has, or why you would think to name a cafe 65 degrees will win a copy of the cafe guide 2010 FREE !!

No beans to report yet, waiting for the make over before the official review, but go down and check it out, tell ‘em thecaFFiend sent you! Keep on Caffeining on!
