Even the most comfortable shoes cannot always keep up with the frenzy of Christmas shopping.  That is why I was so happy to see an old friend on my mad dash through town.  Strand Espresso has been steadily fueling Sydney tourists and shoppers for 7 or 8 years now with their consistently good service, coffee, and food.  This place is always a bit of a bustle, but nonetheless, a smiling waiter seated me quickly.  My skim-flat-white came filled to the brim at a perfect temperature.  This particular coffee had a very notable earthy first note before smoothing out in flavour.  I was not a fan of the taste, but this could have just been the Emerald blend of Danesi that they were using that day.  I have had coffees here before without that specific flavour.

The staff is friendly and efficient. The cafe menu is extremely good for such a small kitchen, and inside they have gourmet odds and ends to round out your pantry.  Sitting with a coffee here in a beautiful Victorian-era arcade doesn’t have to be a break in shopping; it could be a destination unto itself!

SunCafe

This is the part of Bondi that I like best;  the part of Bondi that welcomed me as a traveler so many years ago…   I was wandering down the back streets, away from the beach and buffer of tourist shops, pizzas, and pubs, when I saw the Sun Cafe.  It sits on an appropriately sunny corner with its sister juice bar.  I was drawn to the downplayed beach decor achieved by gnarled wood tables and hand-carved signs.  A dog bowl in the corner and a happy mix of people and prams made for a relaxed atmosphere.  Although I would imagine that on weekends you might have to fight for a seat due to its large all-day breakfast menu.

My skim-flat-white was served with a smile.  The lovely organic coffee was strong, but I did have to search for it under too much froth.  My barista confessed that he had overdone the milk, but he makes some very rich coffee, so for that I forgave him.  Weak coffee is my pet peeve!  I could easily see myself ensconced here on a sunny morning with a newspaper and a big cooked breakfast reminiscing about my life as a one-time Bondi local.

In desperate need of a caffeine hit, the guys at the surf shop told me to head over to their favorite coffee fix, Saltmotion.  New to the neighborhood and hidden off the main drag in Manly, this breezy café is also part funky t-shirt store and part gallery with the beautiful surf photography of co-owner Joel Coleman.  I immediately felt welcome.  Marc Desveaux, co-owner, t-shirt designer, and also my barista, made a rich muddy Americano that let my eyes fully open to appreciate the gorgeous photos.  This is more of a take-away rather than a linger café but there are a few seats to sit and people-watch.  I think this café has a good future in what is a very competitive and particular local market.  The coffee was great, but the vibe of people really enjoying what they do for a living will make sure I visit again.

I flew into Sydney at sparrow fart this morning, a hassle free experience, right through to the trains swooping me from Sydney Airport into Central Train station in what seemed to be way too short a trip.

I am here on a mission. We are deploying our network of coffee reviewers into the harbour city. I was instructed to meet at Single Origin Roasters, a few blocks from Central. I was greeted with a spray of folk around a small but well run coffee shop that looked like it took its job seriously. I like that.

I managed, miraculously to get a seat and order my standard. I have to say, I was blown away. They delivered a perfectly prepared, temerate and tasty coffee. It was smooth and buttery and delighted my mouth. If this is the baseline, the baseline is good. If this place is news to you.. don’t hesitate, shoot on down.

Hats off to the lads and ladetts at Single Origin Roasters, I’ll be back!
