Howdy 2011! I had to get out of Dodge city,… call it insanity but I still was sniffing around for a good brew moments after we hit the Northern Rivers region NSW. I have been enjoying the hospitality of old friends Dave and Carlie that live mid way between Lismore and Nimbin.

We of course made the obligatory pilgrimage into Nimbin, and looked for the best places to enjoyed the local black nectar.

The Coffee House is a lovely unpretentious cafe, with a welcoming atmosphere, good coffee and friendly service. Outside are a few obligatory umbrellas, with, believe it or not our own MCR motto “Life is too short for bad coffee”.. The coffee arrived slightly hot for my taste, but it was well extracted, and had but a hint of bitterness. Well done to Gary and team.

saltmotionweb1

In desperate need of a caffeine hit, the guys at the surf shop told me to head over to their favorite coffee fix, Saltmotion.  New to the neighborhood and hidden off the main drag in Manly, this breezy café is also part funky t-shirt store and part gallery with the beautiful surf photography of co-owner Joel Coleman.  I immediately felt welcome.  Marc Desveaux, co-owner, t-shirt designer, and also my barista, made a rich muddy Americano that let my eyes fully open to appreciate the gorgeous photos.  This is more of a take-away rather than a linger café but there are a few seats to sit and people-watch.  I think this café has a good future in what is a very competitive and particular local market.  The coffee was great, but the vibe of people really enjoying what they do for a living will make sure I visit again.
