Fremantle’s much vaunted cappuccino strip has (rightly) come under fire recently for the substandard quality of food and coffee on offer. Like Lygon st, Carlton from the mid nineties until recently it is a parody of itself, with overpriced, unimaginative cafes and large beer halls that do nothing to cultivate a real coffee culture. However, there are a few gems amongst the rubble and il Cibo is one of them. Located almost opposite the train station and the Post Office, the owners have recently added extra floor to ceiling bifold doors along the whole front which allow one to admire the classic Fremantle vista of Victorian era buildings and palm trees! Inside, the decor is perfect for Perth, not too dark but cool enough for the hot summer afternoons. The coffee is excellent, although service can be slow at peak times. There is an enticing range of fresh salads and home made cakes and pastries on display and a lunch menu that includes burgers and fish and chips. A true cafe to kick off your trip to Freo, or to rest before jumping back on the train!

South Fremantle, WA

South Terrace in South Fremantle is rapidly developing a reputation as a new “cafe strip” in Fremantle, and Aubergine has a big part to play in that. Owned by Dave Cooney, an expat from sunny Wheelers Hill in Melbourne, Aubergine has set the standard for coffee and breakfast south of Fremantle’s cappuccino strip. The decor is pretty basic, but Aubergine has a nice feel, the Polaroids of local dogs adding to the community spirit. Although it’s packed out on a Saturday and Sunday, the service is brisk so that tables usually come up quickly. . Breakfasts are excellent, with breakfast burritos, delicious pancakes and a good range of muffins and pastries to sample. The highlight is definitely the coffee, a special blend made by Bonissimo solely for use by Aubergine. Beans and ground coffee are available for purchase however, so you can take home some of the flavour of South Fremantle with you. Feel free to stop off with your pooch after a walk along the beach, they are catered for here with doggy treats for sale. All in all, a great place to while away anything from a sunny summer’s morning to a blustery winter afternoon.

If Fremantle is experiencing a renaissance of decent food and coffee, then Moore and Moore joins a small handful of cafes that are leading the charge. Tucked away in what was once a merchant warehouse on Henry st, right in the middle of the Notre Dame university precinct, Moore and Moore comprises café and gallery, with regular exhibitions of local artists and sculptors.
The delightfully eclectic mix of furniture, the unfinished plaster walls and exposed ceiling beams help you forget that you’re in the city of cashed up bogans, and remind you of Melbourne’s laneway cafes.

There is an enclosed courtyard out the back perfect for the Perth summers, or for kids to run around in. Mo(o)re importantly, the coffee is top notch, the Fiori blend dispensed expertly from a La Marzocco machine. Nearly 200 people come through here every day, yet surprisingly for Perth the service is slick and friendly. The café menu is also excellent with a good range of breakfasts and lunches. Continuing the eclectic theme, they will also cater for cocktail parties or corporate functions after hours! If you can find it, then get down there, but expect to want to stay most of the morning!

Black Cherries espresso

Deep in the heart of the Fremantle market and wedged between a homewares stall and a cupcake stand, Black Cherries espresso is one of the shining lights in the Freo coffee scene. It’s not a cafe, but it is an authentic coffee experience. Barista Tim Lock mans a table tennis table sized stall that contains a Cimbali espresso machine, five stools and a small counter for resting your coffee on. Despite its humble appearance however, the coffee is top quality, easily some of the best south of the river, and Tim obviously loves what he does. Using local coffee producers Toby’s estate and Dark star coffee, there is a different single origin bean on offer everyday. Unfortunately those days are only Market days – Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday Mondays. You also have to elbow aside other market stall holders on their coffee breaks, but the service is snappy enough that the wait is never too long. Black Cherries is an ideal place to stop for a mid market pick me up before heading to buy your fruit and vegetables, or, being Fremantle, your dream catcher and healing crystals.
