82 James Street, Northbridge WA

Mon-Fri 7-5pm Sat 8-5pm

Just a few doors down from Northbridge icon The Brass Monkey pub is a new arrival on the cafe scene.

Milk and Honey is a breath of fresh air in this popular but sometines maligned entertainment precinct, light, bright and spacious with comfortable imported Italian tables and chairs and cosy booths looking out onto bustling James Street.

The decor is light and bright with marble, a wall mural of honey bees, framed panels with old-stlye pressed metal inserts which was reminiscent of my childhood days at my nan’s house in Collie.

A shiny Synesso and a couple of Mazzers stand proudly at one end of the counter and a display cabinet full of delicious looking rolls, foccacias, slices and cakes at the other.

Chef Santi Panjaroen keeps the menu interesting with fresh produce and daily specials at very reasonable prices.

I ordered a short mach with a splash and it didn’t disappoint, good temperature, looked great, was smooth, rich with good body and was very pleasing on the tastebuds and left a lingering rich aftertaste.

On my second visit I tried a flat white prepared by a different barista to my first visit, it arrived in large cup, well presented but far too hot for my liking, the quantity of milk in the large cup seemed to lose the coffee and it didn’t hit the spot.

Coffee by Five Senses

Bright opulent, good food and service, a definite asset to the Northbridge cafe scene.

Well worth a visit and displays heaps of potential.

Shop 1/234 Naturaliste Terrace,

Dunsbourough WA

Hours: 7am-5pm 7 days

After a good nights rest we headed into Dunsbourough in need of some breakfast and discovered Artezen opposite the legendary Dunsborough Bakery.

Artezen is a popular and spacious cafe with polished concrete floors,  stainless steel with a lively bright ambiance.

Our ample servings of sourdough toast served with lashings of butter, berry conserve and marmalade hit the spot and the breakfasts going out to other diners looked delicious with the aroma of bacon and fresh coffee filling one’s senses. A popular Perth breakfast radio identity and his family were enjoying their breakfast at the table opposite us and sounded as though they were regulars.

A short mach, latte and flat white were ordered for our table, my mach was an ideal temperature, mid-bodied with a pleasant lingering aftertaste, the latte and flat white were given full marks for presentation, temperature was good and the coffee cut through the milk nicely, we had smiling faces all round.

Coffee was a PNG single origin from Five Senses

Artezen was an enjoyable experience with great decor, food and coffee. Things are lookin’ good “Down South”!! A monsoon malabar sized one beaner for these guys.

PS: Sorry for lack of pix–left my camera at hotel!!!

26a Russell Street,

Causeway Bay, Kong Kong

(opposite Times Square)

Just around the corner from our hotel we discovered Corridor nestled between two buildings, you enter by walking down a mosaic tiled passage, it is compact and cosy with works by local artists and photograghers adorning the walls, it reminded me of a Melbourne laneway cafe, free WI-FI is popular with clienetele.

The blackboard menu displayed a good range of cakes, sandwiches and light meals. My wife enjoyed a delicious toasted banana bread laden with real bananas and sprinkled with cinnamon. My son enjoyed a pasta with fresh produce and ham.

I ordered a doppio ristretto which they extracted on a Wega 2 group, my ristretto had a rich dark crema, good temperature, I was hit by bright choc/cocoa notes with good body from a fuller roast and was left with a lingering slightly astringent aftertaste, it satisfied my need for caffeine nicely.

I then ordered a latte machiato, it arrived with an intricate latte art etching adorning the silky smooth milk, the blend cut through the milk to give a pleasant but not powerful choc/caramel taste, another enjoyable caffeine hit.

My wife and son’s cafe lattes were decorated with different etchings which impressed them greatly. They enjoyed their coffees and we returned a couple more times when good coffee was required.

Coffee from Coffee Assembly, Kowloon.

They have four different blends and also sell 250g take-away packs.

Well worth a visit while in Causeway Bay, good coffee, great atmosphere, a shining light in a sea of mediocrity that is coffee in HK.
