105 Winlok Street,

Shuen Wan (near MTR exit A)

This is the final review from my sojourn to  Hong Kong.

On our way to the Macau ferry terminal and in need of a caffeine break we discovered this small cosy cafe with modern decor, trendy music softly playing in the background, coffee bags and photos adorned the walls  and comfortable cushioned seating to rest our weary bodies.

A choice of cakes, muffins, bagels and sandwiches looked inviting , a Rancilio 2 group sat at the other end of the counter. The face masks for the swine flu scare were a little offputting but also reassuring that they were health conscious.

Orders were placed for a short mach, a flat white and an Americano.

My mach looked a treat upon arrival with smooth microfoam and a lovely little rosetta, it had good temperature, mid body and fruity/choc notes  but was  slightly over-extracted and left a sharp aftertaste.

My son’s latte looked amazing with etched artwork displayed on the smoothly textured milk, he commented that it was too hot and too much milk thus diluting the coffee. My wife being a fairly forgiving coffee drinker enjoyed her Americano.

Due to language difficulties on our behalf I could not find out where the beans came from.

We enjoyed our stopover at this cosy little cafe which was quite a few steps ahead of going to Charbucks and the other franchises that abound in this heavily populated city.

No beans here but don’t regret the visit.

MGM Patisserie, MGM Grand Casino

Macau, China

After we enjoyed a scenic trip to Macau on the Turbojet ferry we boarded the shuttle bus to the MGM Casino and took in the grandeur of this magnificent establishment.

With lunchtime looming and our stomachs rumbling we went in search of some sustenance and a caffeine fix. We discovered the Patisserie in the foyer of the casino, the display of dainty cakes, fine chocolates and gourmet sandwiches had us salivating at the thought of dining upon these delights.

My wife and I decided on  a gourmet ham with gruyere cheese sandwich and our son a Caesar salad, my wife chose a berry cheescake tart and I liked the looks of a strawberry torte cake and three capucinos were all ordered.

The food was served by a  very friendly and efficient young lady, it didn’t disappoint and we enjoyed every morsel of the sandwich, salad  and cakes.

The cappucinos arrived and looked quite presentable in rather large cups. The milk looked like the top of a milkshake and what I thought was chocolate sprinkled on top was actually cinnamon, the coffee was reasonable but no seconds would be ordered today.

We totally enjoyed our visit to this gamblers paradise and the lunch was excellent with good service in  luxurious surrounds but I can’t award any beans for the coffee I’m afraid.

26a Russell Street,

Causeway Bay, Kong Kong

(opposite Times Square)

Just around the corner from our hotel we discovered Corridor nestled between two buildings, you enter by walking down a mosaic tiled passage, it is compact and cosy with works by local artists and photograghers adorning the walls, it reminded me of a Melbourne laneway cafe, free WI-FI is popular with clienetele.

The blackboard menu displayed a good range of cakes, sandwiches and light meals. My wife enjoyed a delicious toasted banana bread laden with real bananas and sprinkled with cinnamon. My son enjoyed a pasta with fresh produce and ham.

I ordered a doppio ristretto which they extracted on a Wega 2 group, my ristretto had a rich dark crema, good temperature, I was hit by bright choc/cocoa notes with good body from a fuller roast and was left with a lingering slightly astringent aftertaste, it satisfied my need for caffeine nicely.

I then ordered a latte machiato, it arrived with an intricate latte art etching adorning the silky smooth milk, the blend cut through the milk to give a pleasant but not powerful choc/caramel taste, another enjoyable caffeine hit.

My wife and son’s cafe lattes were decorated with different etchings which impressed them greatly. They enjoyed their coffees and we returned a couple more times when good coffee was required.

Coffee from Coffee Assembly, Kowloon.

They have four different blends and also sell 250g take-away packs.

Well worth a visit while in Causeway Bay, good coffee, great atmosphere, a shining light in a sea of mediocrity that is coffee in HK.

239 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai

Hong Kong (midway between Causeway Bay and Wan Chai MTR stations)

Open 7.30 til late 7 days

Zambra is situated on a corner with full glass windows over the two levels, the cafe is downstairs and the second level is a good place to relax, sip on great coffee and watch the frenetic pace on the streets outside.

They have a comprehensive menu and tasty meals were being served to the eager clientele. My son enjoyed some fluffy scrambled eggs on toast and had a smile on his face on completion.

On entering the cafe the La Marzocco was the focal point of the counter area and that is where I  headed to place our order. A short mach for me, a flat white for my son and my wife her customary long black with a splash, we headed upstairs to await our order  and it wasn’t long before they arrived in Zambra’s own blue and yellow crockery with their logo emblazoned.

My mach looked great in it’s little demi cup, a rosetta and rich choc crema, ideal temperature, huge fruity/choc notes, what a totally pleasurable experience from this single origin Harar, their bean of the day.

My son’s flat white had a petite rosetta atop the silky smooth milk and lovely crema around the rim of the cup, he commented that the coffee came through the milk nicely to give a lovely chocolately taste.

Later in the week I happened to be in Wan Chai and was drawn back to Zambra to sample some more of their  wares.

Tika the lady behind the LM informed me that they were using their Signature Blend so I ordered a short mac .  The customary rosetta sat on top of silky microfoam with rich choc crema around the edges, good temp, good body, bold choc/cocoa notes, another great caffeine hit.

I commented to Tika that it was one of the best coffees I had enjoyed since arriving in HK and she replied that “it’s because I am the barista!!”

This is a quality outlet obviously run by  lovers of the bean, they roast their own beans and the proof is quality in the cup.

Zambra is a must  for visitors to Hong Kong seeking quality coffee and not the franchise muck that abounds on every corner.

Two big beans for this great purveyor of quality coffee.
