Hours: Mon-Fri 7am-5pm

Snugly located in busy Cloisters Arcade, recently opened Lowdown is another quality addition to the ever-growing Perth café scene.

At the helm of this cosy space are Sarah, Claire, Mark and Adam Lowes making this a true family business where they  display their love for good  food, coffee and hospitality.

A Fetco CBS 2021 coffee brewer (similar to a Clover) was acquired making Lowdown the first café in Perth serving this style of coffee. It’s great to see some diversity appearing in our fine city.

The display of flat breads laden with tempting delicacies looked very inviting along with the cakes and slices which are made on the premises, I’ve made a mental note to return for lunch in the near future.

On my first visit my priority was  to road test the Fetco and ordered a long black PNG Kimel PB, I experienced a lovely smooth clean  mouthfeel with  a creamy  body and highlighted  the characteristics of the Peaberry nicely, a great coffee to sit and ponder the problems of the world. I would love to try a lighter roasted COE bean on the Fetco sometime!

Today I  ordered a Lowdown house blend espresso consisting of Mexican, El Salvador and Kenyan beans which produced a medium-bodied espresso with punch which left a lively and lingering aftertaste, I could tell this would go well in milk.

A flat white was next on the agenda, it arrived at an ideal temperature and texture adorned with a dainty rosetta. The blend cut through the milk producing a most pleasurable taste experience that lingered on the palate.

(in front of 78 Records)

With effervescent  Aaron Pyne at the helm (I first met Aaron at Zecca) Cafe Vinyl is located at the front of iconic Perth music outlet 78 Records, this little caffeine outlet has been busy from day one with a constant stream of regulars coming in for their daily fix.

The counter front is adorned with old vinyl records in keeping with the venue, at one end is  a glass cabinet displaying some tasty morsels, at the other end a three group Synesso and Mazzer grinders are the tools of trade with a custom three bean blend in the hopper.

I ordered the customary espresso and wan’t disappointed, temperature was spot on with a slightly citrus acidity and then lovely rich choc/cocoa notes and a lingering aftertaste, I could tell this was going to go well in milk.

Sitting under the umbrellas watching the world go by my flat white arrived with a rosetta, smooth silky milk, good temperature and as expected the blend cut through the milk to give a most enjoyable taste experience and an aftertaste that pleasingly hung around the ages.

(lower level under Dome)

I witnessed a very polished routine by Andrew at the WA Barista championships on the weekend and decided to head into his place of employment to sample some of his coffee for which he showed such a passion for.

Tartine has only been open for less than three months and has a steady clientele heading in for a caffeine hit and some of their tempting food.

They have a range of natural sourdough baguettes with gourmet fillings, I savoured a baguette filled with delicious ham, brie and a mango chutney and it tasted as good as it looked. They have a choice of French pastries, a range of gluten free breads and biscuits and their Belgian hot chocolate sounds like a decadent treat.

Producing the java is a 3-group Synesso with Mazzer grinders and a 4 bean specially selected blend from Five Senses.

I started with a lovely viscous espresso in a demi ACF cup, it had a clean crisp acidity, good body with  a rich mouthfeel and a lingering pleasant aftertaste.

A flat white soon followed the espresso and had a dainty rostetta atop the silky microfoam and temperature perfect, the Bannister Downs milk with its natural sweetness enhanced the smooth texture with the blend cutting through the milk and lingering on the palate making for a most enjoyable taste experience.

Another great little cafe to enhance the ever-improving Perth specialty coffee scene serving great coffee, delicious food with  friendly service.

Keep up the good work Niall, Andrew and crew I’m going to award a couple of beans here!
